Inspired by the 1962 movie Days of Wine and Roses, the song was a breakthrough hit for Withers and reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. For the song's third verse, Withers intended to write more lyrics but then followed the advice of other musicians to leave the "i know" phrase which was repeated 26 times.
At the time of writing the song, he was 31 years old and was working at a factory making toilet seats. The song won the Grammy for the best R&B song in 1972.
Lyrics

It's not warm when she's away
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And she's always gone too long
Anytime she goes away
Wonder this time where she's gone
Wonder if she's gone to stay
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home
Anytime she goes away
And I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know,
Hey, I oughtta leave young thing alone
But ain't no sunshine when she's gone
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
Only darkness every day
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home,
Anytime she goes away
Anytime she goes away
Anytime she goes away
Anytime she goes away
